Writer, Novelist, or Author? Which is correct?

Everyone seems to like to label other people. We label ourselves as well. When you write books, what do you label yourself?

That is the big question. Some see themselves as a writer until they are published then they consider themselves an author. Others jump right in and say they are an author right from the start. Or perhaps a novelist? Does it matter what label is used? The process is the same…

You sit day in and day out and create characters, worlds, settings and plots. You hope someone will love the things you create in your mind and put down on paper {so to speak}. Your main desire is for someone, anyone to read what you write.

In today’s fast-paced world, there are options to being published, traditionally through a publishing house, or you can self-publish.

New authors struggle to have their work read by the general public. Word of mouth only goes so far. Social media is helping with this. If you are lucky, you find a writing group that offers not only support for you but a way for you to reach out to readers you may not have otherwise found.

There is such a group called Ninja Writers on Facebook. This group is running an e-book giveaway featuring 40+ e-books for you to download for free. These are all new authors who have donated their books for you to read and enjoy.

Check out the books, download whatever interests you and find a new author you may not have discovered before. All you have to do is click on the link below. No strings attached. Promise.

The tale of a flighty muse

Let me introduce you to my muses.

One of them, I keep locked in a cage, for the most part, though she occasional escapes. She is referred to as my ‘evil’ muse. I have very little control over her. Okay, no control. When she comes out to play, I am not responsible for anything she creates. She was born during my fanfiction days. She is responsible for pairings that were very non-canon in the HP universe. Her idea of fun is to take two people who should not be together, and put them together.

Anyone familiar with the HP world will understand if I tell you she is responsible for creating stories which paired, Lily/Remus, Sirius/Remus, and Hermione/Sirius {post Hogwarts}. She is truly evil. Luckily, she seems to be happy to only play in the fanfiction world.

My main muse, she is the flighty one. She is also stubborn and prone to fly off and leave me hanging without anything to write. Here is what she has put me through over the past couple weeks…

Nano story: We had built a world, created everything for it, from setting to characters. Everything we needed to know for the backstory and things that would probably never be used in the book, but we knew anyway. We were set to write on November 1st. Then, she decides, she doesn’t want to write this story.

Wonderful. So, we search around and decide to finish a story that has already been started. No research, or world building, it has already been done. We can just write. I begin to do a bit of editing of what is written, I even let her have some down time and freedom to write a bit of fanfiction.

Monkey wrench time! She doesn’t want to write that one either. So, here we were, six days out from NaNo, no story and no idea for a story except two words she kept screaming at me: Fallen Angel! No plot, nothing else.

I have no clue what to do with this, she isn’t helping, either. Evil muse is screaming she wants to write a Supernatural fanfic pairing Dean/Cas. I am ready to fire both of them and hire a new muse. If I can figure out how this is possible.

I am looking through old story ideas, hoping to tempt her with something or get an idea somewhere that I can work in the fallen angel. Muse jumps on an old idea of a vampire story from years ago and a plot is born.

So, here I am, four days out from NaNo, and I have to research five centuries of history for this book. And muse drops the bombshell, she isn’t just going for the 50,000, no, she is going for a completed book of 80,000 or so by November 30th.

Aren’t muses wonderful?

Just Write…

Both websites I was working on are finished. The Writers Forum for writers of fanfiction and Writers Unite for writers of original fiction are open. Please see the links to the left. —->

Muse- she has decided while we are waiting for November 1st and NaNo to start, she wants to write…however, she has latched on to a fanfiction idea. What is strange is it isn’t the fanfiction she used to write, Harry Potter. No, this is something completely new. This is Supernatural fanfiction.

So, I write. I give in to what she wants because as long as she is happy and writing that is a good thing. If she decides to switch back to an original fic we have started, I will be more than happy to do that.

The main thing is to keep writing. Just write everyday. Keep those brain cells functioning and the creative juices flowing. Use this fanfiction to work on things I struggle with in my original fictions. The more I write, the better writer I will be.

So, just keep writing…

And on to something new…

Over the past two weeks, my muse has been stubborn. She has refused to work on Night Within A Day revisions. I’ve learned not to push her when she gets in her moods because it does no good as nothing worthy comes from her during one of her snits.

So, what have I been doing during her downtime? I’ve been building two websites. One is for writers of original fiction (Writers Unite) and one is for writers of fanfiction (The Writers Forum). The links to these are in the left column. Both of these are just about complete, only a few little things left to do. They are for the most part, ready to go. Come and join us on either board or both.

Now, muse is awakening again with the excitement building for NaNoWriMo. What is NaNoWriMo you ask. It is a month long challenge that runs from November 1st to November 30th. During these 30 days, you must write 50,000 words. Sounds impossible doesn’t it? It really isn’t…as long as you don’t fall behind. It is only 1667 words per day.

Muse has a new story idea that I am currently researching to see if it will work out as a novel. All of the research looks great, however, having a hero, heroine and a situation they are in isn’t enough for a full length novel. I have no antagonist other than the situation which really doesn’t count. Or does it?

As a born pantster, it is strange to be seriously considering doing an outline, even a simple one. However, I am thinking about doing just that. Muse has already given me the ending in a brief way as well as the beginning. I just need to figure out the in between.

I don’t know why she couldn’t just pick one of the other 10 stories we have started to work on…Nope, she has to start a brand new one.

Well, I guess that is what NaNo is all about, new things! For those interested, here is the website:

Daily Struggles

How does one stay focused when the internet is just a click away? I wish I knew. Monday I merely meant to research one small thing and before I knew it, hours had past and my brain was fuzzy from all of the different websites I had been on. Perhaps unhooking the ethernet cable from my desktop would help, but my phone is connected and if the sound of Facebook messenger were to go off…

I am weak, I will admit to that. For example, Monday when I went to bed, I planned on staying off the internet once my email was checked. I woke up feeling sick so the entire day yesterday was spent not on working on revisions but online. I did do some research so the entire day was not a total waste.

This morning, I woke with a migraine. I take medicine and hope for the best. It is now late afternoon and I am starting to be able to concentrate. However, once again, I have lost the better part of the day. I will finish the revisions on chapter two today. I may feel like the sloth above, but I can at least do that much today.

Tomorrow is another day…tomorrow I will get chapter three and four done so I can get back on track. Yes, that is what I will do. Two months to NaNo, no time to waste. And besides, muse is starting to get the itch to actually write something new on this manuscript. I may have to split my days between revision and writing…

Revisions and such

I have been lucky enough to find myself a wonderful beta/editor who has agreed to help me with revisions on the completed chapters of my manuscript. I know the old adage that you write the entire novel before going back to revise/edit. I am going against that rule for some very good reasons.

  1. I have been away from this manuscript for months. I could easily have just reread it and started writing from where I left off, but while rereading, I noticed too many things that needed adjusting.
  2. I am the type of person who is OCD. I know what I have isn’t solid now. I would rather have a solid base foundation going forward that finish and have the entire book needing work.
  3. I am insecure and I needed to know that this manuscript, my baby, is really worth finishing.

I have a solid plan in mind. Right now, Night Within a Day stands at just about 45,000 words. The average romance novel should be between 80,000 and 100,000. I am half-way finished. I can finish revisions by Halloween, if not sooner, which will give me a solid base going into NaNo in November. The novel I started during NaNo in 2011 will be finished this year.

My goal is to have it ready to publish by mid-April as a birthday present to myself. I can do this, I will do this.

Coffee is hot and strong…I am off to revise.

First blog post

Welcome

Hi, my name is Terri and I have been writing for what seems like forever. I took a break to raise my kids, (I have 3 and 8 grandchildren), then started again when I found Harry Potter fanfiction. Now it is original fiction I am writing, but you may just find some HP fanfics on here.

I will be posting through the process of getting my half-finished manuscript from my first draft to published book. All of the ups and downs I go through. Now, don’t go thinking this will be mostly doom and gloom with the trials and tribulations of a writer. Daily life has a way of being silly sometimes, and I will share those moments as well.

I hope you enjoy your time here and enjoy reading excepts from my novel. I encourage comments on writings I post. Good, bad, indifferent. Writers need feedback if we are going to write something worth reading.

So, stay tuned for updates and my muses ramblings of things she just wants to write when she gets stubborn and has one of her “brilliant” ideas.
